Diary Dates

Here is the latest information relating to the completion of Bronze Duke of Edinburgh

 

 
   The final expedition for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh has been scheduled for the weekend of 15th-16th October. Before they complete the expedition students are expected to attend a navigation training day to refresh their map reading skills. Key dates and details are as follows:
 
Route Planning – Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 27th of September
On these dates The Charter School will close at 1pm for open days, DofE participants will need to remain behind on one of these days to complete their route planning. Route planning should take 2 hours and students will leave school at the normal time of 3pm.

A list of the different teams has been attached to this letter. The teams are scheduled to complete their route planning as follows:

Tuesday 21st – Red, Pink, Yellow and Green teams

Wednesday 27th – Blue, Black and Purple teams

 
Navigation Training
In order to refresh their map reading skills students will be expected to attend a day’s navigation training in Shoreham, Kent. Two days have been organised for Saturday 8th and Tuesday 11th October. Every effort has been made to ensure students do not miss school but the limited availability of trained staff means that some of the students will have to miss a day on Tuesday 11th October.

Students will be responsible for making their own way to Shoreham Rail Station where they will be met by representatives of The Charter School. The navigation day will start at 09:30 hrs and finish at 16:00 hrs, students will spend the day navigating around Shoreham and they are responsible for making their own way home from the station. Details of trains from North Dulwich Station to Shoreham Rail Station and the teams scheduled to attend each day are as follows:


 
  • Saturday 8th October
    Teams attending: Red, Pink, Yellow and Green

    Train details

    Leaving North Dulwich Station 08:42 to Peckham Rye Station arriving at 08:46. Change at Peckham Rye and travel to Shoreham Station leaving at 08:55 and arriving at 09:34

    Return Journey: Leaving Shoreham Rail Station at 16:04 to Peckham Rye 16:43. Change at Peckham Rye and travel to North Dulwich Station leaving at 16:57 and arriving at 17:02
 
  • Tuesday 11th October
Teams attending: Blue, Black and Purple

Train details

Leaving North Dulwich Station 08:43 to Peckham Rye Station arriving at 08:48. Change at Peckham Rye and travel to Shoreham Station leaving at 08:55 and arriving at 09:34

Return Journey: Leaving Shoreham Rail Station at 16:11 to Peckham Rye 16:50. Change at Peckham Rye and travel to North Dulwich Station leaving at 16:57 and arriving at 17:02

 
A kit list for everything students will need on the navigation day has been provided
 
Kit Check Wednesday 12th October
 
During their final expedition students will be assessed by an official representative from the Duke of Edinburgh Award, it will be this person who decides if a student has done enough to pass the expedition. The first part of the assessment will involve a kit check on Wednesday from 15:30 – 16:30 hrs. Students will need to bring in their packed rucksacks to the assembly hall and collect their group equipment; trangia stoves, tents and first aid kits. A kit list is available in the DofE link on the school website.
 
Final Expedition 15th & 16th October
 
Students will need to make their own arrangements to arrive at East Grinstead Rail Station on Saturday 15th October at 10:00 hrs. The rail station is situated next to a large Sainsbury’s supermarket with ample parking for those who wish to drop off their children by car.
 
Train times for students planning to travel by rail are as follows
 
Journey to East Grinstead Station
Leave North Dulwich Station at 08:32 arriving at Selhurst 08:50. Change at Selhurst and travel to East Croydon leaving at 08:54 arriving at 08:57. Finally Travel from East Croydon to East Grinstead leaving at 09:10 arriving at 09:47.
 
Return Journey
Leave East Grinstead at 15:15 arriving at Oxted 15:32; from Oxted travel to Purley leaving at 15:39 arriving at 16:09, from Purley travel to Streatham Common leaving at 16:17 arriving at 16:34, finally from Streatham Common travel to North Dulwich leaving at 16:45 arriving at 17:13
 
Students will start their expedition from East Grinstead station, throughout the day they will navigate, via staffed checkpoints, through Ashdown Forest and set up camp at Broadstone Warren. The following day they will return on foot to East Grinstead Station. A member of staff will stay at East Grinstead until all pupils have been collected by their guardians or have taken the train home.
