The Charter School

Calling all engineers

22 Year 8 and 9 students took part in a STEM day to learn about engineering. Their task was to design and build a wind turbine capable of generating electricity. All the teams managed to complete the task successfully and generate at least some current when tested against an electric fan. Two teams were able to generate over 3 volts with their turbines. Everyone ended up with a working knowledge of gear trains and electricity generation and structures as well as having a really challenging team experience. The event was facilitated by the Smallpiece trust and sponsored by Thames Water. It was very well managed and presented by Dennis Perry from the Smallpiece trust.

Two students from winning groups will be offered residential courses in engineering at Portsmouth University in July
