Overview

 
Last year 100% of our A Level students achieved grades A to E with 50% achieving a C or above.
Aims:
·    To encourage pupils to develop the skills, grammar and knowledge they need to apply them in meaningful exchanges
· To develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of French/Spanish from a variety of registers
· To communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in another language through both the spoken and written word, using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language
· To increase their sensitivity to language and language learning;
· To develop critical insights into, and contact with, the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries or communities where another language is spoken
· To develop positive attitudes to foreign language learning
· To provide a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for pupils who do not progress to further study in the subject
Offer:
· All students in KS3 receive two hours of language teaching a week. In Year 7 pupils are not set.
· Setting begins in Year 8 with two sets. Pupils learn Spanish for three modules and French for two modules. At the end of Year 8 pupils can opt to carry on with Spanish or French in Year 9.
· Students can take two languages at GCSE
· At KS4 pupils currently have three hours per week.
· At KS5 Students study for five hours per week and are expected to do five hours per week independent study.
Our Facilities:
· Three classrooms fully fitted with interactive whiteboards and audiovisual equipment.
· Smaller classroom for intervention groups
Our Staff:
· Our languages department staff has a wealth of experience in teaching and using languages in other fields. The Department organises many trips abroad and has also been successful in securing outside funding to enable pupils to participate in projects with schools abroad.
Other Links:
· British Council – we have close associations with the British Council. Three year 12 students were selected to take part in a research project (some of only 40 students across the UK). This involved two weeks in France followed by preparation of a paper on areas of French life
· Year 10 students under took a week long study in Paris with a secondary school year
· Every year we organise language visits to Dieppe, Barcelona and Paris
· We subscribe to www.linguascope.com a web based resource where pupils can find revision materials for all year groups.
