Strategies for Homework
Preparation:
- Establish a positive work space that can be regularly used and with as few distractions as possible.
- Have a separate set of stationary that is just for homework so as to avoid wasting time looking for equipment.
- Build in scheduled homework time slot that works well within the home, this should become a routine.
- Perhaps try using a visual checklist for example a small white board where all homework is written and ticked off as completed.
- Check planner every day for homework and due dates.
- Help child prioritise homework by breaking it into smaller chunks.
During:
- There is a recommended homework time allowance available on the school website (see ‘homework timetables).
- Make sure that your child is comfortable and settled and clear about what they are meant to be doing.
- If possible try to be available to give assistance if necessary.
- Do not let your child get overwhelmed, frustrated or upset by the work. (If they are unable to complete the work, write a note in their planner for the subject teacher).
- Time – allow 5 minutes break after every 20minutes (perhaps keep a clock nearby so that your child can keep track of the time).
After:
- Praise your child for his/her efforts
- Use planner to communicate with teachers
- Check that your child has packed away all completed homework/books and that their bag is ready for the next day.
