The Charter School

Kent Swimming Champions

 News story.....

Sophie Simpson and Archie Mitchell who are in Year 9 both  took Gold in their butterfly sprint events at the Kent County Championships – with Sophie setting a new event best performance time.

Archie also won the 100m fly and the 1500m freestyle – a gruelling 60 length race which he completed in 18.08.21. His sister, Maisie, who is in Year 10  took silver in the 15 and under girl’s 1500m event.

For Sophie and Archie a degree of competitiveness has improved their performance without damaging their friendship: “Because we train together we are always trying to beat each other. It’s good to have someone to push you along in training and it helps when it came to the race,” said Sophie.

Both train together at Beckenham Swimming Club and Tony Beckley, the head coach, was absolutely delighted by the performances of his swimmers throughout the club: “They’ve been training hard throughout the cold winter months, and it was wonderful to see so many of them rewarded with fantastic personal best times. These kids really deserve to win.”

Basketball....
After dealing with a string of close defeats this year, The Charter School finally drive themselves to a solid victory against Globe.

Sam Wray Easton started things off at the point guard position with some beautiful dishes to Michael Brown who finished each one nicely with some powerful moves down low. Later on in the game, Sam Wray Eastons text book shooting technique shone with Sam making 2 from 2 from the arch and pushing Charter into an undeniable lead. Michael Brown also did an incredible job of keeping globes MVP off the ball with some truly inspiring denial defence.

Nathaniel Campbell and Samuel Jefia linked up nicely to capitalised on sloppy defence from Globe with Nathaniel draining some nice jump shots from the baseline. Wilson Kiiru came into his own with some intelligent cuts through the key; finished off with some delicately placed, old school floaters. Jamie “the work horse” Taylor Leech held true to his name and worked hard on defence, helping the team to victory with a handful of offensive rebounds.

Thulani Maazda took it to Globe with some relentless fast breaks, accurately delivered by the strong arms of Jamie Yebour-Baffour who’s intensity on defence also deserves a mention. Tolani Alex-Oni did his part using his dominating reach to scoop down several defensive rebounds to secure both the ball and the game.

Look out for the basketball games to be held at The Charter School. The team has put in the hours in training under the watchful eye of Mr Duggan to provide you with some seriously entertaining basketball, so come down and show them some love! Go Charter!
