The Charter School

Sophie Simpson

Sophie swims for the school but also trains at Beckenham swimming club.

Sophie is 2nd in the Country for 50M Fly, Short Course (which means she achieved this time in a 25M pool) for girls aged 14-15 with a time of 29.41, just 2/100ths of a second off the top slot.  She is 11th in the Country for 100M and 200M fly, also Short Course

Sophie does a minimum of 13 ½ hours swimming a week and 2 hours of land training.  She also does 2 hours of water polo on Sundays, which she considers her day off!  She gets up at 5.30 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning to do 1 ¼ hours training before school and even has to get up at 6.30 on a Saturday morning to do 3 hours. The rest of her training hours are made up in after schools sessions, every weekday – even in the holidays!

Throughout the year from September to July Sophie competes in competitions with the goal at the end to achieve her National Times and swim against the Country’s best in The National Youth Championships held in Sheffield in August.  Last year she achieved 2 National qualifying times, competing in both the 100m fly and 50m freestyle events. This year she has already reached the long course (50m pool) qualifying time for 100 fly with 7 months to go.  Next weekend Sophie is travelling up to Sheffield to swim in the highly prestigious Burns Meet.  The event attracts top swimmers, such as Rebecca Adlington and even a team from Canada competing this time.

Her coach told her just after Christmas that her goal this year has now moved on to British Championships, the next step up!
